ABSTRACT
The earth’s surface temperature has increased by between 0.74 and 1.8 degrees Centigrade since 1906. At least part of the global rise in temperature, we now know, is a result of human activity. The global atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide – one of the greenhouse gases most directly responsible for the greenhouse effect and global warming – has risen by 35 per cent since the year 1750; more than 70 per cent of this rise can be attributed to the burning and consumption of fossil fuels – oil, gas and coal. 1
