ABSTRACT

The budding market for carbon generated by the Kyoto Protocol process is creating opportunities to supplement income from traditional forestry activities with income from the sale of carbon emission services. The Canadian province of British Columbia (BC), with its vast forest areas and sophisticated forest industry, is well-positioned to take advantage of these new developments. Carbon markets do not just happen, however. Creating new markets for services such as carbon sequestration requires substantial efforts on technical, legal, and commercial fronts. This Chapter examines the progress being made in developing such markets in BC.
