ABSTRACT

Malawi is endowed with a sizeable capture fisheries resource (between 50,000 and 70,000 tonnes are landed annually) through possession of Lakes Malawi, Chilwa, Malombe and Chiuta, and other aquatic systems. The fish that come from these resources provide valuable protein (over 50 per cent of the nation's animal protein intake), income and employment. During recent years, there has been growing concern that these resources are being overexploited. A case in point is that of the Lake Malombe fishery.
