ABSTRACT

Anthropogenic climate change due to emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs) will be one of the major environmental problems of the 21st century. Greenhouse gases are not local environmental pollutants and thus there is no domestic incentive to reduce their emissions. They arise in all sectors of an economy, which means that an efficient climate policy has to be cross-sectoral. Owing to global mixing of greenhouse gases, an efficient climate policy must be applied on a global scale. Renewable energy does not lead to greenhouse gas emissions and thus is a crucial part of a strategy to reduce emissions.
