ABSTRACT

Reflective aid practice concerns learning in action to effect change for the better. The cycle in Figure 1.3 in Chapter 1 shows how action is followed by reflection and questioning, leading to seeing one's action in a new light, to a reframing of problems and to a revised plan of action. The contributions in this book are part of such a cycle. In most cases, the authors’ intentions were to inform their own future practice, as well as to influence the practice of their readers. This is not easy, particularly when there is more than one author involved, each with a different history of involvement in the matter discussed – and therefore a different perspective on what happened and what they learned. Relationships matter as much in the reflection and questioning stage of the cycle as in the moments of planning and action. Nevertheless, while a shared effort may be a harder undertaking, it also offers greater possibilities through learning from each other.
