ABSTRACT
New Zealand’s 6.4 million hectares of indigenous forests make up just under 25 per cent of the country’s land cover. Approximately 77 per cent are under Crown ownership, managed by the Department of Conservation. Of the privately owned estate, approximately 31 per cent is in Maori ownership (MAF, 2002a).
