ABSTRACT

Questions of ownership and resource rights are central to plant conservation. Without a feeling of ownership – publicly recognized – there is little motivation to manage land or plants for long-term objectives. This chapter examines concepts of possession, property and protection, with special emphasis on traditional conservation, statutory law and protected areas.
