ABSTRACT
In situ plant conservation will almost invariably involve local residents, given that local people are in such a strong position to immediately influence the fates of plants. Projects are relatively short-term initiatives aimed (in the present context) at improving the state of people-plant relationships from the conservation perspective. An element of institutionalization in new patterns of behaviour will increase the likelihood that benefits will continue after projects end.
