The Muskwa-Kechika Management Area: The Failings of a Multidisciplinary Rather than an Integrated and Interdisciplinary Approach

The Muskwa-Kechika Management Area (M-KMA) is a unique management area in northeastern British Columbia, Canada, encompassing more than 64,000km² of the Northern Rocky Mountains and Great Plains (see Figure 11.1). It is arguably one of the most significant wilderness areas in North America (M-KMA, undated), and possibly the largest unroaded wilderness south of 60°N on the continent. The M-KMA has the potential to remain one of the largest wilderness areas in North America, but there are many challenges in addressing interdisciplinary and integrated planning and management.
