ABSTRACT

The words ‘integrated approaches to research and management in mountain areas’ give a hint of the challenges that these approaches pose, and the opportunities they present, to government or private land managers, researchers and other stakeholders. Integration of any kind poses challenges, and mountains are particularly challenging systems to access, work within, and understand. The introductory chapter described how this book is built around three major themes: research beyond disciplinary boundaries; integrated approaches to managing ecosystems; and mountain environments and the people who depend on them. This final chapter synthesizes the key issues that emerge from the different chapters and identifies key lessons for undertaking integrated research and management.
