The easiest ways to do this are purchasing green electricity, investing in new renewable power plants, planting trees or buying into other ‘offset’ schemes.
We said earlier in the book that electricity generation is not the UK’s main source of carbon emissions. Out of the total greenhouse gas emissions of 12.5 tonnes per year, less than 1 tonne results from electricity use in the home. Gas for heating and cooking is far more important. Nevertheless, it is worth cancelling out the carbon dioxide from electricity. Each kilowatt hour of electricity (about as much as it takes to run a dishwasher) generates nearly 0.5kg of carbon dioxide.
