ABSTRACT

The biggest sources of emissions matter most. Getting down to 3 tonnes per year isn't easy; but neither is it impossible. For the UK homeowner, the best steps for cutting direct emissions are as follows:

Run a good new central heating boiler, insulate the house properly and turn down the thermostat.

When the time comes to change the car, buy a small diesel with manual transmission. If you can, join a car club instead and travel fewer miles.

Only fly when absolutely necessary (this probably means never).

Buy small, highly efficient electric appliances, such as refrigerators and TVs. Don't use tumble dryers.
