ABSTRACT

Approximately 51 per cent (40.1 million hectares) of land in Mozambique is covered by forests, with another 19 per cent covered by wooded grassland and 12 per cent by mostly grasslands. There are three forest land categories in the country: 26.9 million hectares of productive or high commercial value timber (mainly forest concessions); 14.7 million hectares of multiple use (mostly for subsistence fuel and construction materials, and also where competition between many uses and many users is noticeable); and 13.2 million hectares of conservation reserves (DINATEF, 2006). The last of these categories covers approximately 15 per cent of the surface area of the country and is managed by the National Directorate of Conservation Areas in the Ministry of Tourism.
