ABSTRACT

Landfill is the predominant disposal route for waste in the UK. Figures in the UK Government’s 2000 waste strategy (Defra, 2000) show that around 60 per cent of controlled waste (excluding sewage sludge and dredged spoils) is currently landfilled. Recycling and reuse account for 26 per cent. In 1990 approximately 435 million tonnes of waste were produced annually in the UK, of which 245 million tonnes were controlled wastes. Industrial waste (other than construction and demolition waste) accounted for 70 million tonnes and commercial waste 15 million tonnes.
