ABSTRACT

Most environmental professionals will look at the phrases ‘integrated thinking’ and ‘corporate governance’ and consider them to be at best fashionable buzzwords or at worst oxymorons. Their pedigree is not inspiring. Integrated thinking is prompted by the awareness that there has been a less than coordinated approach to business functions and management systems within organizations and government. In addition, many are seeking an integrated approach to environmental, social and economic issues under the umbrella of sustainable development. The recent emphasis on corporate governance and accountability, on the other hand, is largely inspired by the breakdown of trust between such organizations and their many stakeholders.
