ABSTRACT

People tend to receive information about their surroundings through visual means. The way in which the form and the surface of an object appear in our surroundings depends upon the way in which these objects are illuminated and how our eyes perceive the light that is reflected from their surface. Visual comfort defines the quality of this process. Besides ensuring better working conditions, light also affects the natural level of people’s health. The scope of this chapter is to introduce the importance of quality natural and artificial lighting in ensuring visual comfort with respect to urban buildings, and the interaction between lighting and energy use in these buildings.
