ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the work of a local non-governmental organization (NGO), the Anjuman Samaji Behbood (ASB), in Faisalabad, one of Pakistan's largest cities. The experience shows the possibilities of supporting community-built and financed sewers and water supply distribution lines in the informal settlements in which most of Faisalabad's population lives. The work of ASB suggests a model where provision for water, sanitation and drainage could be much improved in the city despite deficiencies in the existing infrastructure and institutions and the limited availability of local government resources. ASB also manages a successful micro-credit programme for local businesses.
