ABSTRACT

Wastewater storage and treatment reservoirs (WSTR), also called effluent storage reservoirs, were developed in Israel to enable the whole year's treated wastewater to be used for crop irrigation during the irrigation season (Juanicó and Shelef, 1991, 1994; Juanicó and Dor, 1999; see also Barbagallo et al, 2003*; Friedler et al, 2003*). With an irrigation season of four months in Israel, this means that three times the land area can be irrigated, and three times the quantity of crops produced. In water-short areas, such as Israel and also many parts of the developing world, this is a major agricultural advantage. The use of WSTR thus maximizes the potential of wastewater re-use for crop production (Chapter 21).
