ABSTRACT

The United Nations Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 7 (‘Ensure environmental sustainability’) includes a clear statement on drinking water: ‘Reduce by half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water’. According to the MDG Monitor (2008), South Africa is well on track with MDG 7, stating that ‘significant achievements have already been made in areas, such as access to basic water supply’. The South African government has also committed to the provision of safe potable water to all by 2008. According to the MDG Monitor, 88 per cent of the population had access to improved drinking water sources in 2004.
