ABSTRACT
The first edition of this book (1889) has long since been out of print. The second edition now offered is the result of careful revision of the first. Mistakes have been corrected, the running commentary has been improved, and some parallel passages from Western literatures have been inserted. A few additions have been made to the Index, which was the work of my late wife and one of my many literary debts to a devoted collaborator for thirty-eight years.
