ABSTRACT

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) follow-up encompasses a family of components and tools, as defined in relation to individual proposals. However, follow-up is part of a larger, generic field of ex-post evaluation, which refers here to the analysis of all aspects of EIA and Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) effectiveness and performance. Broadly defined, this field is concerned with how well these processes work, what benefits they deliver for decision-making and the environment and which factors contribute to their success or shortfall. A large body of work addresses these themes in one way or another, yielding insights and perspectives that extend and frame the conduct of follow-up studies.
