ABSTRACT

Proponent-led initiatives (first-party follow-up) can play an important role in achieving and enhancing follow-up outcomes (Chapter 1). This chapter presents the experiences of a proponent based in the UK using self-regulation instruments to maximize positive environmental outcomes through sound implementation of mitigation measures for both major and minor development projects (not all of which required Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) or follow-up by regulators). It presents both a theoretical perspective and case study examples of the role of industry self-regulation in EIA follow-up.
