ABSTRACT

This chapter has two main objectives. First, it outlines a framework, the ethical matrix, for ethical analysis of technological procedures – for example, in cases in which animals are used in agricultural systems. The framework has been described in several earlier publications so that the brief summary provided here is intended primarily to provide an appropriate context for discussion of the second objective. The latter focuses on an aspect of the framework that relates specifically to the relevance of animal sentience in the process of ethical deliberation. This aspect has not been discussed extensively in earlier publications on the ethical matrix.
