ABSTRACT

Adaptation to climate change is likely to reduce expected impacts on health

in two ways: firstly, by requiring changes in the roles of health agencies,

including planning and response to extreme weather events and surveillance

of infectious disease; and secondly, by modifications in non-health sectors,

that is, food production, transport, built environment. Who is competent to

take these actions? Nobody can state with confidence that they are. However,

much of the competence and skills that have been applied to previous health

challenges can be applied to facilitating a transition to a society adapted to

climate change.
