ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter we have illustrated, in theoretical terms and with practical examples, the key characteristics to be considered when analysing the quality of alternative energy sources. In this chapter, we contextualize this analysis of the quality of alternative energy sources in relation to, first, the wisdom accumulated in the field of energetics over the last two centuries; and, second, the recent debate provoked by a paper published in Science on the assessment of agro-biofuels. The chapter closes by proposing an alternative grammar for the integrated analysis of agro-biofuels, starting out from the controversial study published in Science, and building on the concepts developed by the great pioneers in energetics.
