ABSTRACT

The Chinese government issued and released the Middle and Long-term Renewable Energy Development Plan in September 1997. A mandatory target has been introduced to increase the share of renewable energy in the national energy supply. Power from renewable energy sources will account for 10% of the total energy consumption by 2010 and 15% by 2020. The share of renewable power, excluding hydro, in the main electricity grids should reach 1% by 2010 and 3% by 2020. Electricity investors owning an installed capacity of more than 5 GW are requested to have a share of renewable power, excluding hydro, in their electricity generation capacity of more than 3% by 2010 and 8% by 2020. Wind power has been identified as a priority renewable energy technology. According to the Plan, the installed capacity of wind power should reach 5 GW by 2010. Since the cumulative installed capacity of wind power surpassed 6 GW in 2007, the NDRC increased the wind power target for 2010 from 5 GW to 10 GW. Based on the current development momentum, the total installation of wind farms could reach 30 GW by 2010.
