ABSTRACT

The last chapter analysed a variety of ways that information about the sustainability of urban development was presented. It emphasized that such information defines what counted as sustainability in these contexts and offered a standardized way of assessing and measuring such sustainability, thus rendering the issue governable as suggested by the governmentality framework. The emphasis on technical dimensions and the rise of the carbon agenda puts a certain kind of expertise centre stage and, by implication, marginalizes other definitions and expertise.
