ABSTRACT
Interpretations of the past are accounts of a period, written in a subsequent period. To try to make sense of the past, historians combine their inferences about sources to create accounts of the past. In Chapter 2 we considered the many reasons why sources may be interpreted differently. In this chapter we shall consider why accounts may differ, but be equally valid, and also why they may be of different levels of validity.
