ABSTRACT

The aims of the second edition of this book remain the same as for the first edition. It is written as a core text for both experienced primary teachers and initial teacher training students. It shows readers, through a series of case studies, working with children and teachers across the primary age phase, how to plan interesting history lessons that develop pupils’ historical understanding in increasingly complex ways and how this can be assessed. The processes of historical enquiry are embedded in the case studies: making deductions and inferences from sources, selecting and combining sources to create accounts that explain changes over time and communicating these in interesting ways. The case studies are illustrated by pupils’ work and talk. Links are made between theory, practice and research, encouraging readers to reflect upon and develop their own practice.
