ABSTRACT

Our goal in this fi nal chapter is simply to summarize some of the things that we know about reading and to highlight what has yet to be learned. Throughout this book we have concentrated on presenting you with what is known about reading. In many cases, however, the data were incomplete or equivocal, and so we summarized the best available evidence. When it was necessary to provide some theoretical interpretation we did so, and our interpretations have been guided by an implicit general theory of the reading process.
