ABSTRACT
The manor was the basic unit of feudal landownership. Although this was not susceptible of exclusive rights, it would be both paradoxical and false to regard it as any less than ownership. In early modern times, the tenant of demesne in fee was considered, and often called, the owner of the land. 1
