ABSTRACT

Founder Bernard Botejue began his career as an employee of Sri Lanka’s pioneering garments manufacturing company. He set up his own business as sole proprietor with a small amount of capital. There was strong involvement from family members in the running of business, but there was no formal structure in the organization. The business was initially established in 1948 mainly for the domestic market, and Bernards became a household name in woven/knitted garments, especially underwear. There were buyers in the capital city, Colombo, who had Indian business connections and they in turn exported the merchandise to India.
