ABSTRACT

A model program is described for elders with mental retardation, based upon the concept of art as therapy. Its goals are to provide (1) an age-appropriate creative activity for a population which often lacks meaningful retirement pursuits; (2) exploration of the developmental issues of aging; and (3) creative expression fostering an increase in self-esteem and autonomous functioning. Topics include the role of the art therapist, motivation of participants, responding to the art work, and promoting autonomy. The impact of the art experience on the participants and implications for future program development are also discussed.
