ABSTRACT

There are two distinct ways by which we use statistics to estimate parameters: point estimates and interval estimates. A point estimate is one number used to estimate a parameter. For example, the statistic p^ is a point estimate of the parameter p. It is the best one number based on sample data by which to estimate p. A point estimate will often be very close to the target parameter, but it is not necessarily precisely correct.
