ABSTRACT
This paper presents an analysis of the barriers to social action in social group work. These barriers are seen as springing from the educational, professional, organizational, and societal contexts of practice. After an examination of such barriers, solutions are proposed. These include changes in the curricula of social work schools, developments in practice theory, modifications in agency conditions, and linkages to instruments of social change in the larger society.
