ABSTRACT
Although it is not possible to end on a promising note, the study of normative economics is a fascinating one. It is fascinating to discover how writers have been tempted into adopting particular simplifications in the endeavour to reach sweeping conclusions, whether positive ones or negative. And it is a fascinating study for its being so tantalising and elusive, and also for its offering so much scope for invention, insight and elegance.
