ABSTRACT

The focus of this book is primarily how to design and implement ProMES. However, there are other methods of improving productivity besides formal feedback systems. Examples include goal setting, incentives, quality circles, and gain sharing. Reviews of these and other techniques have been published (Bullock & Lawler, 1984; Bullock & Tubbs, 1990; DeNisi & Sonesh, 2010; Gerhart, Rynes, & Fulmer, 2009; Guzzo, 1988; Guzzo, Jette, & Katzell, 1985; Hamner, 1988; Ilgen & Klein, 1988; Katzell & Guzzo, 1983; Kluger & DeNisi, 1996; Lawler, 1971; Ledford, Lawler, & Mohrman, 1988; Locke & Latham, 1984, 2009; Locke, Shaw, Saari, & Latham, 1981; Martocchio, 2010; O'Dell, 1981, 1986; Thierry, 1987; Woodman & Sherwood, 1980). Many of these techniques can be very successful when implemented properly and can also serve as effective additions to ProMES. For example, goal setting and incentives are much easier to work with when there is a single index of productivity such as provided by ProMES. Therefore, we briefly offer suggestions for applying ProMES in concert with goal setting/feedback interventions and incentives. We conclude this chapter with a discussion of ProMES and the Balanced Scorecard and Six Sigma.
