ABSTRACT
The rate of unemployment, taken as a percentage of the total potentially active labor force, trebled during the second half of the 1970s. Growing dissatisfaction with rising unemployment probably encouraged a few right-wing military officers to plan the unsuccessful coup d’état of February 1981. The social and political problems generated by Spain’s severe unemployment problem will remain a serious threat to the country’s young democracy for some time to come.
