ABSTRACT

The changes at the top, in the commanding positions of industry and trade, were accompanied by changes in the lower ranks of employment. In general, industrial employment tended to rise less than the national product; and, considering the higher productivity of labour, this is not surprising. What may appear more surprising is that the numbers of wage-earners in the narrow sense of the term should have grown even less than industrial employment as a whole.
