ABSTRACT

The ability to use language grammatically correctly is a key component and an integral part of effective communication in the TL. This chapter is based on the premise that the development of communicative competence is a key goal for FL teaching and learning. Importantly, following Canale and Swain (1980), we consider communicative competence to encompass sociolinguistic, discourse, linguistic and strategic competence (see also Pachler, 2000). Therefore, this chapter deals with grammatical competence as a subset of communicative competence.
