ABSTRACT
The ability to understand the cultural context of FL use is a key aspect of effective communication in the TL and cultural components have played an increasingly important part in FLs curricula. The conceptualisation of culture, however, has changed over time and varies in different jurisdictions, as does its assumed relationship with the language component.
