ABSTRACT

The first post-Furman execution occurred on January 17, 1977.1 It had been almost a decade since the last execution had taken place in June of 1967. There were no executions in 1978, and a total of five over the next four years, between 1979 and 1982. In 1983 and 1984, several details of the post-Furman statutes were clarified.2 In 1983, there were five executions. Then, in 1984, there were 21. The post-Furman era of executions had begun.
