in the Kuomintang government during the Nanking decade. He led the government and Chinese armed forces through eight years of war against Japan (1937-1945) until Allied victory, was elected president, but lost the civil war to the Chinese Communist Party. He and his Kuomintang followers fled in 1949 to Taiwan, where he ruled until his death.
