meteorology Contribution: Bjerknes made some advances in

early radio-wave theory, but he is recognized primarily for his extensive work on the formation and behavior of cyclones, polar fronts, squall lines, and other weather phenomena. Under his direction, the Norwegian Weather Forecasting division at Bergen became the world center for meteorological study between 1918 and 1930.
