physiologists of the nineteenth century and made major contributions to the understanding of the process of respiration and the function of the inner ear. Yet he is remembered primarily for his discovery of the cathartic or "talking out" method of treating neurotic disorders, a discovery that led, through Sigmund Freud, to the development of psychoanalysis.
