ABSTRACT
Early Life Carrie Lane, the second of three children, was born on January 9, 1859, in Ripon, Wisconsin. Her parents, Maria Clinton and Lucius Lane, originally from the state of New York, had come west to live as farmers. In 1866, lured farther west by the Gold Rush, the family moved to Charles City, Iowa, where they remained throughout Carrie's adolescence.
