ABSTRACT

Feature writing is another form of nonfiction writing related to news writing. Related, but not the same. If news involves the hard-edged reports about fires and floods, trials and political scandals, then features are the reports that go behind the news and beyond it. They focus on the history of the building destroyed by fire, the plight of the families displaced by a flood, the heroism of paramedics. Features outline the development of the legal premise on which a trial revolves, and they call attention to the people whose lives are turned inside-out by a political scandal. Hard news is the who, what, when, and where. Features are the how and why.
