ABSTRACT

As a final note it is useful to go back to the beginning. Understanding a bit about the origins of contemporary conservatism and liberalism explains a great deal about their differences as well as their internal divisions. Earlier I presented the branches of conservatism and liberalism as offering diverging answers to the distinct questions of each ideology. In our current political conversation there are other important divisions that are worth understanding as well, especially the disagreement between neoconservatism (neocons) and more traditional conservatism (paleocons), and among liberals the division between multiculturalists and traditional liberals.
