ABSTRACT

Nafissatou Niang Diallo was born in a military camp near Tilène (Tileen in Wolof) Market in Dakar. Although her mother died when she was one and a half, Diallo’s autobiography depicts a happy childhood in a large and loving family. Shortly after she started school, Diallo’s family moved to a house in the elite Plateau section of Dakar—hence the title of her autobiography, From Tilène to Plateau. This move represented a rise in wealth and social status.
