ABSTRACT

GADAMER, HANS-GEORG (1900-) Philosopher whose pioneering system of criticism and philosophical hermeneutics has been influential in twentieth-century philosophy, aesthetics and theology. He was a pupil of Martin Heidegger's and a professor at LEIPZIG (UNIVERSITÄT) in 1939-1947, professor at FRANKFURT AM MAIN (JOHANN WOLFGANG GOETHE-UNIVERSITÄT) in 1947-1949 and then professor at HEIDELBERG (RUPRECHT-KARLS-UNIVERSITÄT) in 1949-1968. Gadamer formulated his statement on hermeneutic theory, partly derived from concepts of Wilhelm Dilthey, in his major work Wahrheit und Methode. Grundzüge einer philosophischen Hermeneutik (1960), where he elucidates the possibility of finding truth by means that go beyond the traditional analytical tools His other works include Hegels Dialektik Fiinf hermeneutischhetudien (1971), Vernunft im Zeitalter der Wissenschafft(1976 )nd Das ErbeEuropas (1989).
